Return to Web mining, tools, and performance evaluation . These are program-centric approaches to coalesce information sources and unify the query interface without inherent user modeling. This paper discusses in detail an alternative: a user-centered, conversational portal which extends the ALICE chatbot technology platform and links the user conveniently to information resources, such as Web Services, with specialized query routing. The approach offers scalability, extensibility, and coordination between end-users and developers. A university Intranet implementation, the Catacomb system, is presented and discussed to illustrate the advantages of the conversational Web portal approach. ![]() DiSC'03 © 2003 Association for Computing Machinery |
